May 11 Begin your journey as you meander along the Connecticut coastline to Newport, Rhode Island. Today you will visit one of the most beautiful mansions in the city, Marble House, inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Over 7 million dollars was spent just for the marble in the house. Built for William Vanderbilt, he presented it to his wife for her 39th birthday. Later today, check into your hotel, the Holiday Inn Middletown for 2 nights. May 12 After an included breakfast, take a scenic drive along the spectacular 10-mile Ocean Drive, past Hammersmith Farm, Fort Adams and secluded beaches. Then visit the Breakers Mansion, the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages”. Built for Cornelius Vanderbilt II by architect Richard Morris Hunt, the house contains 70 rooms and overlooks the pristine waters of the Atlantic. This afternoon you are free to wander through the shops of Bowen’s Wharf or stroll along the waterfront. Later you will visit Green Animals, the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States. There are 80 pieces of topiary throughout the gardens, including 21 animals and birds in addition to geometric figures and ornamental designs. Dinner is at a local restaurant this evening. Thursday,
May 13 Following
breakfast, depart Newport for Mystic Seaport, the nation's leading
maritime museum. Explore American maritime history first-hand as you climb
aboard historic tall ships, stroll through a re-created 19th-century coastal
village or watch a working preservation shipyard in action. After lunch, depart
for home arriving about 5:00 pm. Hotel Holiday Inn Express 855 West Main Road Middletown, RI 02842 CONDITIONS A deposit of $100.00 per person ($139.00 with insurance) along with the completed application is due as soon as possible. Make
