Join Mike on this well-balanced 13-day vacation in Scandinavia with highlight features like the Flam train included. Start from Stockholm in Sweden and travel via Lake Mälar to Helsingborg from where you cross by ferry to Denmark and visit Frederiksborg Castle on your way to Copenhagen, Denmark. Take pictures of the Little Mermaid and sail to Norway. Visit the Heddal Stave Church and Vemork, scene of the daring sabotage action celebrated in The Heroes of Telemark. From Telemark enjoy a scenic drive via the famous Latefoss waterfall and Hardangerfjord to picturesque Bergen. The next two days include a romantic boat cruise on the Sognefjord and a ride on the world-famous Flam train, followed by a relaxing train ride to Oslo, where sightseeing features Frogner Park and the City Hall. Itinerary Tuesday, September 9 Newark – Stockholm This evening you depart from Newark on Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) for the overnight flight to Stockholm, Sweden. You’ll be served dinner and a continental breakfast en route. Wednesday, September 10 Stockholm Welcome to Sweden. After proceeding through immigration and customs, your tour guide will take you to the hotel. The afternoon is free to relax or explore Sweden’s capital. At 6:00 pm the group gathers for cocktails. Overnight: Scandic Sergel Plaza Hotel Thursday, September 11 Stockholm Sightseeing with a Local Guide features the Royal Palace, Riddarholm Church, and the festive blue and gold chambers in the City Hall. The afternoon is at leisure to explore on your own or take an optional outing to the fascinating Wasa Ship Museum. Overnight: Scandic Sergel Plaza Hotel Friday, September 12 Stockholm – Huskvarna Enjoy the Swedish countryside during a comfortable drive south via Lake Mälar and the garrison town of Örebro to historic Vadstena. Continue along Lake Vättern to Huskvarna, noted for its sewing machines and bicycles. Overnight: Quality Hotel Winn, Huskvarna Saturday, September 13 Huskvarna – Copenhagen, Denmark Cross by ferry from Helsingborg to Denmark and enjoy vistas of Hamlet’s Kronborg Castle at Elsinore. Continue to Copenhagen, capital of Denmark. Afternoon sightseeing with a Local Guide features the Church of Our Savior and the Stock Exchange on the way to Christiansborg Palace where you visit the elegant Royal Reception Rooms. Drive past the National Museum and the Royal Theater, and snap pictures of Amalienborg Palace and the Little Mermaid statue. Overnight: Cruise ship Monday, September 15 Olso Harbor – Telemark, Norway After disembarkation, stop to admire the Heddal Stave Church, the largest of the country’s remaining medieval wooden churches. Via Lake Tinnsjöen - where saboteurs sank a ferry loaded with heavy water, ruining Nazi hopes of winning the race for the atomic bomb - enter the Rjukan Valley. Then the highlight of today: a guided visit of Vemork, scene of the daring sabotage action celebrated in The Heroes of Telemark. Learn about the dramatic events of 1943 and gain insight into the technology of hydroelectric power generation, one of the pillars of Norway’s economy. Continue to rustic, unspoiled Telemark. Overnight: Park Inn Rauland Hogfjellshotell, Telemark, Norway Tuesday, September 16 Telemark – Bergen Today, see thundering Låtefoss Waterfall, and continue via Odda and the orchards along Sorfjorden, whose tranquil splendor inspired Grieg’s Morning Mood. Cross Hardangerfjord by Ferry from Utne to Kvanndal, and arrive in picturesque Bergen. Overnight: Clarion Admiral Hotel, Bergen Wednesday, September 17 Bergen During your orientation tour learn about Bergen’s 11th-century origins and its association with the Hanseatic League. Time later to stroll through the narrow lanes of ancient Bryggen and to ride the funicular up to Mount Fløyen. Overnight: Clarion Admiral Hotel, Bergen Thursday, September 18 Bergen – Flam This morning a scenic drive to Gudvangen. Next, the highlight of today: a leisurely cruise on one of Norway’s most famous and splendid fjords, the Sognefjord. Arrive in the late afternoon in Flam for your overnight stay. Overnight: Fretheim Hotel, Flam Friday, September 19 Flam – Myrdal – Oslo Today experience breathtaking Norway: start the day with a ride on the famous Flam Train to Myrdal and see the magnificent Kjosfossen Waterfall. Then change to the Bergen-Oslo train which takes you across the Hardanger National Park and through the beautiful Hallingdalen Valley to Norway’s capital, Oslo. Overnight: Rica Victoria Hotel, Oslo Saturday, September 20 Oslo Sightseeing with a Local Guide features the National Theater, Parliament, and the Royal Palace. Stroll through magnificent Frogner Park with Gustav Vigeland’s sculptures and visit the modern City Hall. Afternoon and evening at leisure to relax or to shop for sweaters! You may wish to join an optional excursion to see relics of Norway’s glorious seafaring past: elegant Viking ships, Thor Heyerdal’s Kon-Tiki raft, and more. Tonight, a farewell dinner has been prepared at your hotel to celebrate the success of your vacation. Overnight: Rica Victoria Hotel, Oslo Sunday, September 21 Oslo - Newark Today you bid farewell to Oslo as you board your jet for the short flight to Copenhagen and on to Newark where you arrive at 2:45 pm with fond memories of your wonderful Scandinavian vacation. Conditions A deposit of $300.00 per person ($479.00 with insurance), is due along with the completed application to confirm place. Final payment is due June 23, 2008. Cancellation Penalties All cancellations are subject to a $50.00 administrative fee plus the following: Before May 23, 2008: $50.00 Between May 23 to June 23, 2008: $300.00 per person. Between June 24 and July 23, 2008: $1250.00 per person. Between July 24 and August 23, 2008: $2500.00 per person. After August 23 , 2008: No refund Insurance Cancellation insurance is $179.00 per person and must be purchased at time of deposit. Insurance will entitle you to a full refund if you have to cancel for a covered reason. Once purchased, the premium is non-refundable.
